Research Overview

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is the acetylated derivative of the semi-essential amino acid L-cysteine and a widely used chemical tool for replenishing intracellular glutathione — the principal endogenous low-molecular-weight antioxidant in mammalian cells. In experimental settings it is applied in models of thiol-redox biology, hepatic detoxification, mucus rheology, and cystine–glutamate antiporter (xCT) modulation in the central nervous system. It is one of the most extensively studied compounds in redox research, with decades of published literature. No therapeutic or clinical claims are made or implied.

Primary Research Areas

Glutathione Synthesis & Redox Biology
The canonical chemical tool for replenishing intracellular GSH and probing thiol-redox-dependent cellular processes.
Hepatoprotection & Detoxification Research
A reference molecule in models of acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity, NAFLD, and ischemia-reperfusion liver research.
Pulmonary & Mucolytic Research
Studied for modulation of mucus rheology and oxidant–antioxidant balance in airway research models.
Neuropsychiatric Research
Investigated in experimental paradigms centered on the cystine–glutamate antiporter (xCT) and extra-synaptic glutamate tone.
Fertility & Metabolic Research
Explored in oxidative-stress-related models of reproductive biology and metabolic regulation.
