Research Overview

Glutathione is a tripeptide formed by an atypical γ-peptide bond between the side chain of glutamate and cysteine, followed by a standard bond to glycine. The reactive thiol on the cysteine residue is oxidised to a disulfide when glutathione donates electrons to reactive oxygen species, a reaction catalysed by glutathione peroxidase; the oxidised form is then recycled by glutathione reductase using NADPH. The resulting ratio between the reduced and oxidised forms is widely used in research as a measure of cellular redox state. Glutathione also acts as a cofactor for glutathione S-transferases in the conjugation of electrophilic compounds, and participates in reversible protein S-glutathionylation as part of redox signalling. No therapeutic or clinical claims are made or implied.
