Overview

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indoleamine hormone produced mainly by the pineal gland and synthesised locally in a number of other tissues. Its production in the pineal gland is timed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and follows the light–dark cycle, taking place at night. It is studied as an internal synchroniser of daily and seasonal physiology. This description is informational only and does not imply any health effect.

Associated Areas

Pineal Hormone
Produced centrally in the pineal gland of vertebrates, particularly mammals.
Light–Dark Cycle
Its synthesis is timed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and follows the daily light cycle.
Daily and Seasonal Rhythms
Studied as an internal synchroniser of circadian and seasonal physiology.
Widespread Synthesis
Besides the pineal gland, it is also synthesised locally in many tissues.
